Disabled Author Series With Underground Bookshelf
I originally met Laura at Self Pub Con (The Alliance of Independent Authors self publishing convention that takes places every October). We started meeting online with another writer in South Africa to chat about our writerly lives, and then Laura became part of my silent writing group.
Recently she began a project to share the thoughts of disabled writers, and I was honoured to be asked to take part in the series on her Underground Bookshelf blog. A New England-based, queer, neurodivergent writer who likes to envision a world where art helps build the world we want to live in. Laura is married to her gorgeous, resourceful, and brilliant wife, Jasmine and their cat, Julie, who she describes as “the cutest little allergen you could possibly meet”.
Laura lives with a chronic illness so her days, week, and month can take a lot of odd detours depending on her health and energy levels. So, she does her best to balance the work that comes with her blog, and the hurdles of managing chronic illness.
In this fascinating series we talked about a lot of things including: what I write, who I write for. Where I get my inspiration, where I fit in the disability/chronic illness community, how my disability impacts my writing, both in how and what I put out. What disabled representation in literature means to me: How I feel about what there is, and what I would like it to be.
“It does affect me, because disabled people make up enough of society to be shown in literature, and we aren’t, I often say it’s like we are hiding in plain sight”.
Laura also asked each of her interviewees for our advice to new and aspiring writers. All in all, an interesting and thought provoking interview and one that I really enjoyed.
